There are lighter axes on the market, but these tend to be more expensive and at a penalty of function. It is the best swinging of the three lighter axes in this review by far, and perfectly bridges the real estate between minimalist axes and alpine climbing tools. However, its light weight makes it tough to judge how much power to put into the swing, and as a result it’s hard to not over-drive the ice axe. I have the gully and it is great, but it is really for those who are weight conscious! It doesn't have enough mass to really stick easily into ice.
